Spread out on two floors of the museum, “Noise” is a multifaceted live performance piece embodying three mediums: performance, video and sound – to explore the relationship between language and meaning.
The upper portion is the live performance space, situating the performer behind a green top table, clad in a striking black sherwani continually reciting clauses from the Constitution of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan.
The audible output of the area below i.e the first performer/viewer interaction (through the live cctv feed), is tampered with in a manner so as to make it sound chaotic, unarticulated and vaguely recognizable: striving for communication that goes beyond the limits of language, thereby opening up possibilities of other means of communication, also attempting to search for a language that is immune to the manipulation of sound/words.
Losing interest for language as a means of communication is similar to losing faith in the very systems of governance/law of the land. My performance thus aims to depict the opaqueness of language/law and its failed implementation.
